Azure Managed Services: Optimising Performance & Security

Key Takeaways

  • Microsoft now calls Azure a consumption business, so your configuration and governance decisions directly drive your monthly spend.
  • Wasted Cloud Spend rose to 29% in 2026, driven by AI and new service complexity.
  • CMA – Egress and Switching changes make portability a realistic buying requirement for UK Azure customers.
  • Azure Security Failures usually come from misconfiguration and unmonitored alerts, not missing tools or platform weaknesses.
  • Tested RTO and RPO targets, not simply enabled backups, determine whether your business survives a serious outage.
  • Fortray Tech delivers managed cloud, security and compliance services, helping UK organisations run Azure with clear accountability.

On 2 September 2026, Microsoft changed how it reports Azure to investors. For the first time, it will disclose quarterly Azure revenue as a standalone figure, as part of a reorganisation that cuts its operating segments from three to two. The disclosed numbers were significant: roughly £22 billion for the latest quarter, and annual Azure sales above £74 billion, up from about £56 billion a year earlier.

Under the new structure, Azure is essentially Microsoft’s consumption-based platform and infrastructure business. This consumption-based means your Azure bill depends on how your environment is configured, patched, sized and governed, every hour of every day. Microsoft’s growth comes from usage. If that usage is efficient, it is your responsibility.

Fortray Tech, fix these gaps daily: environments migrate successfully, then drift in cost and security. This article explains what Azure managed services should cover and how to judge a provider.

Why Azure Disclosure Matters to UK Businesses?

For most organisations, Azure spending grows faster than anyone planned. The pattern is familiar. The migration finishes, the project team moves on, and the environment then drifts: test VMs stay running, storage tiers never get reviewed, and new AI services are enabled without budget alerts.

Independent data shows this is getting worse, not better. The State of the Cloud Report – 2026 found that wasted cloud spend rose to 29% after five years of decline, linked to the added cost complexity of AI and new IaaS and PaaS services. Managing cloud spending was still the top challenge, reported by 85% of respondents, even though 63% now have dedicated FinOps teams.
